Angelina Jolie: The Drive to Give

While filming in Cambodia in 2001, Angelina Jolie’s eyes were opened to the plight of refugees.
“It was very clear to me there was a lot about this world that I didn’t know. I felt really ashamed and ignorant. . . . It just changed my life.” -Angelina Jolie
Angelina’s response to her experience was to adopt Maddox out of Cambodia, and contact the United Nations, to ask what she could do to help. They in turned, harnessed her star power by naming her Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commission on Refugees. But she not only lent her name to the plight of the poorest of the poor, she’s invested a considerable amount of her time, making tours of UNHCR refugee operations in the Balkans, Sierra Leone, Namibia, Tanzania, Kenya, Cambodia, Thailand, and Pakistan and Ecuador. In addition she has contributed three million dollars to this cause. A quick tour of a recent Forbes survey of top ten celebrity philanthropists, she is outstanding in her generosity, donating nearly 10% of her net worth, while others donate a mere fraction of theirs.
What makes Angelina give so much of herself? Is it as Forbes says:
they benefit from a public-relations standpoint. The more good they do, the more the public loves them
Or does she have other, deeper motivations?
At the top of Angelina’s chart is a powerful collection of planets, her Moon, Jupiter and Mars in the impulsive sign of Aries. This collection gives her a warrior’s spirit, quick to the fight. The Moon is where her emotions live. As we’ve discussed in previous posts Jupiter is linked to the spirit of helping other people. Mars pushes these impulses hard. When she sees something that needs to be done, she can hardly wait to do it. This is why she didn’t blink an eye at the thought of adopting a stranger’s child as her own. This collection of planets is in tension aspect to her Pluto in Libra, which makes her painfully aware of social injustice. With her Venus, the planet of personal resources in challenge aspect to the Moon, Jupiter and Mars stellium, she is compelled to give of her resources past the point of prudence. Her Sun, her essential essence is in tension aspect to the planet of spirituality, Neptune. She has high minded ideals that may exceed any one person’s ability to fulfill.
Angelina’s drive to help is genuine. It comes from her heart. In the years to come, we’ll see more of this star’s efforts to relieve the plight of those less fortunate than herself.
