Asteroid Goddesses by Demetra George and Douglas Block 1986 ACS Publications
The complex nature of women and our roles in society is reverberated throughout the themes in this ground breaking work of four asteroids associated with female goddesses.
In pre-Hellenistic society a centuries long cultural war was waged between the invading and patriarchal Archaean tribes from the north and the then matriarchal tribes of Greece. In Greece, the Mother Goddess was worshipped in diverse forms and royal lines of succession came from the distaff side. As the two cultures clashed and eventually merged, the power of the feminine goddesses was subverted and reinterpeted to fit within the patriachal framework of the invading peoples. Here we see the origins of centuries long repression and denial of feminine power The fractured nature of today’s vision of feminimity can be traced to this ancient cultural war.
In this book, Ms. George delineates the function of four goddesses as represented by the asteroids Ceres, Pallas Athene, Vesta and Juno. The mythology behind each goddess is richly told, with plenty of juicy tidbits for mythology buffs to digest. The mythology is tied to the broad historical picture of the times, which augments the meaning of the material. Ms. George intends for the asteroid material to supplement the meaning of the birth chart by defining our innate feminine natures. She weaves a rich psychological picture of the significance of these asteroids in our charts.
This book has stood the test of time, as relevant as when it was first published in 1986 as it is today.
Everyone can find something of interest in this book The casual reader will enjoy the mythology of the goddesses and the historical commentary. Beginning astrology students will find the same and can learn the beginnings of incorporating new material in chart readings. Intermediate students and advanced astrologers will enjoy learning how to incorporate these concepts in their chart readings.
