Astrological Analysis: A “Psych” Out of Shawn Spencer

Shawn Spencer hails from a family of cops, and was fully expected to carry the torch by his father, Henry, who meticulously schooled his son from a very young age in the finer points of detective work. But while Henry made him a detective, he can’t make Shawn be a detective.

It soon becomes clear that Shawn’s extraordinary powers of observation and deduction are still no match for his overdeveloped sense of fun, as he takes a string of random jobs strictly for enjoyment and entertains himself calling in tips to the police hotline for crimes he sees on television

In the series opener, after calling in one particularly accurate tip, he had to come up with a reason why he knew so much so he wouldn’t be considered a suspect in the crime. His solution, he pretends to be psychic, which apparently is more believable than “I notice things that trained police detectives, don’t.”

Sadly the USA Network nor Wikipedia does not give us Shawn’s birthday, so we are on the hunt to peg his horoscope down. Let’s take a look at Shawn’s resume, also posted at USA:

Resume
Shawn Spencer

Summary of Skills

Well round backgound in management, human resources, construction, entertaiment, public relations, food service, guest services, product development, education, retail and public service. Good with computers.

Education

Class of 1994-Leland Bosseigh High School, Santa Barbara, CA

Work History–(Has had 57 jobs since graduating high school)

Most Current Position–

Chariman and CEO, Psych, Santa Barbara, CA 2006 to Present

-Provides freelance paranormal support for law enforcement and victims
-Assists police in investigations as well as the apprehension and detention of dangerous and occasionally terrifying criminals.
-Occasionally subverts police procedure according to dictates from the spirit world

A penchant for detective work, rebels against authority, mentally astute, works with his best friend from childhood, and just plain wacky, that just cries out Aquarian. But he also has an overblown sense of fun, and in many ways is an overgrown child acting out for attention. This is the signature of one of the fire signs, Aries, Leo or Sagittarius.

Let’s look at some other facets in his life:

His relationship with his father is strained, mostly from Henry’s attempt to impose a sense of order in Shawn’s chaotic lifestyle.

His mother is curiously missing, with no explanation given for most of Shawn’s life, leaving his father to care for him.

He was described by one of his teachers as “disruptive” even though “she loved him anyway”.

He has no girlfriend, no mention of significant past relationships, and no inkling of any developing in the future. James Roday says of his character, ‘Is Shawn going to fall in love and give it all up, for the woman he loves? I don’t think so”. Shawn is interested in girls all right, but his last love interest turned out to be the murder suspect in the case he was working:

Gus: You’re dating a murderer!
Shawn Spencer: Not exclusively

So what would be Shawn’s birthday?

The Dragons of Wiki site posits his birthday as March 24, 1979 and his birthplace as Chicago, but without source references we can’t be sure this is accurate. However, it is a pretty good guess. A Sun in Aries conjunct Mercury in Aries explains his exuberant approach to life and his tendency to run off at the mouth. His Moon would be in eccentric Aquarius, which at once explains his rebellious nature and his romantically aloof nature with women. Venus in Aquarius squares Uranus, also a sign of the same and a penchant to pick up unusual women, like his murder suspect. Sling his Saturn in the fourth house to describe his difficult relationship with his father, and you get an attention seeking tenth house Sun, with Mars in Pisces sitting in the tenth house. With that Mars in harmonious aspect to Jupiter now sitting in the second, he earns his money as “ta dah!” a psychic.

One thing for sure, at age twenty-nine, Shawn Spencer is experiencing his Saturn Return. Who should show up at his door at last season’s close? His long lost mother.

Until Psych’s creators come up with an “official” birth date, this is a good working one. But if anyone has any suggestions, shoot it by!
