Astrological Analysis: Indiana Jones, Not Your Usual Cancer
May 15, 2007

Our next block buster movie is on the horizon. Let’s take a look at the fictional life and times of Indiana Jones. and the astrology of the swashbuckling archaeologist’s complex psychology. He is not your usual Sun sign Cancer!
Here is a little bit about the movie and Jones as he is portrayed in it:
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull has the bullwhip-wielding hero up against Soviet bad guys led by a black-wigged Cate Blanchett as Irma Spalko, leader of the Soviet army’s quest for the Crystal Skull.
Marion Ravenwood, Indy’s girlfriend from Raiders of the Lost Ark, is back - played again by Karen Allen - and together they find themselves in the South American jungle encountering quicksand, amphibious vehicles, Ugha warriors, giant ants and a massive python.
Indy’s sidekick this time is played by 21-year-old Shia LaBeouf, star of last year’s Transformers. LaBeouf adopts a punk-rebel persona as Mutt Williams, a leather-jacketed, switchblade-carrying, motorcycling adventurer, who may or may not be Indy and Marion’s son.
“We chose to acknowledge the passage of years, and Indiana Jones is now the same age as [Harrison Ford].
“Indy still makes mistakes. He still gets hurt, and he still sometimes makes a fool of himself in front of women . . .
And here is a biography of the fictional character.
Biography
Indiana Jones was born Henry Jones Jr. to Scottish-born Professor of Medieval literature, Dr. Henry Jones Sr. (played by Lloyd Owen in the TV series and by Sean Connery in the films), and his wife Anna on July 1, 1899, in Princeton, New Jersey. “Junior” accompanied his father on his travels throughout Europe, where he learned to speak, read, and write 27 languages, including French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Swedish, Greek, Arabic, Turkish, Vietnamese, Swahili, Latin and Chinese, as well as some Hindi, apart from English. Although his father called him “Junior,” Henry Jr. adopted the name of his beloved dog Indiana for himself, insisting he be referred to as Indiana Jones. It is not known for sure when he first did this, except that he was referred to as Indiana during childhood by his peers. In 1912, Indy was living in Utah and was a member of the Boy Scouts with the rank of Life Scout. It was here, while attempting to secure the Cross of Coronado from thieves, Indy first learned to use the bullwhip and received his trademark fedora. This was also the time when he first developed his aversion to snakes.
His father wanted Indiana to go to Princeton University. To escape this, he ran away from home by train. He ended up in Mexico and was kidnapped by Mexican revolutionaries. He joined this army of revolutionaries, playing a part in the Mexican Revolution in 1916, under Pancho Villa. It is here that he also met his friend Remy, a Belgian. With Remy, he left Mexico and eventually made his way to Africa at the beginning of World War I.”
Indiana Jones is a fictional character, but he comes with a fascinating history and biography as seen above. The biography of Jones lists his birthday as July 1, 1899 in Princeton, New Jersey making him a sun sign Cancer. Since Jones is described spending his early years traveling with his professor father, I’ve slung his formidable stellium of Gemini planets, containing his Pluto, Venus and Neptune into the ninth house of travel. It gives him an Libra ascendant, the same ascedant as Harrison Ford, the actor who portrays him. Libra ascendants are very charming creatures indeed and he always has a smile even for his enemies. Jones has a prominent tenth house Sun, with strong ego drives to succeed in his profession. Brash Aries is his moon, in the seventh house, which gives him a strong desire for a partner, but problems in attaining one. We can see with this moon, along with an opposition to Jupiter, Jones proclivity to “make a fool of himself in front of women. Saturn in Sagitarius is another sign that he has difficulties with comittments, and uses his itchy feet to get out of sticky situations.
With all those planets in Gemini, you just know he has a facility for languages and Jones is said to have mastered or have a working knowledge of twenty seven of them. But with an opposition to Saturn, he had a difficult time accepting an academic role, rebelling against his father’s wish to go to Princeton, In this Saturn opposition to his ninth house, he sees his father and academe as one in the same, forcing him into roles that he did not craft for himself. All that travel is not settling for a home loving Cancer and he possibly sees his father’s insistence on learning and travel the reason why Indy was deprived of maternal love Under the influence of Saturn sitting on top of his Sun and inconjunct his natal Uranus, he sees no other option than to run away from home. After a series of adventures, he finally enters college at age of twenty, when transiting Jupiter enters his eleventh house of organizations and sextile his ninth house of education. He completes his education under Professor Abner Ravenwood and leaves abruptly in 1926 when Jupiter enters his fifth house of relationships, inconjunct his tenth house sun and sextile his ninth house planets of travel. It is clear through this transit that he is confused about his relationship with Miriam, Ravenwood’s daughter, seeing yet again as a tie to the academic world that threatens to seals him in a predefined role.
Transiting Pluto plays a significant role in Jones’ life, riding as it does the top of his chart, going through his ninth house during his early and teen years and through his tenth during his early and middle adult life. Through this Pluto we see the larger than life hero, mirroring the turbulent and dangerous times of the first half of the last century. Through Jones adventures we see the transformative historical influences that define our culture today.
