Astrology of Election 2008: Steinem vs. Palin, When Opposites Don’t Attract
September 5, 2008
Opposites attract, at least that is the common wisdom, but apparently not in politics. John’s McCain’s vice presidential choice has drawn heavy criticism from the doyenne of feminism, Gloria Steinem. In an op-ed piece in the Los Angeles Times, Gloria writes:
She opposes just about every issue that women support by a majority or plurality. She believes that creationism should be taught in public schools but disbelieves global warming; she opposes gun control but supports government control of women’s wombs; she opposes stem cell research but approves “abstinence-only” programs, which increase unwanted births, sexually transmitted diseases and abortions; she tried to use taxpayers’ millions for a state program to shoot wolves from the air but didn’t spend enough money to fix a state school system with the lowest high-school graduation rate in the nation; she runs with a candidate who opposes the Fair Pay Act but supports $500 million in subsidies for a natural gas pipeline across Alaska; she supports drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve, though even McCain has opted for the lesser evil of offshore drilling. She is Phyllis Schlafly, only younger.
Gloria Steinem has nothing good to say about Sarah Palin, and there are people that understand her views. But here is one viewpoint written by a commenter on the GretaWire site:
Gloria S. doesnt get it at all. . . Real women know whats it like to have the baby puke on you as your walking out the door, or have the dog jump on you with muddy paws. Real woman know how to handle it when the kids decide to give each other haircuts they day before school pics are taken. They know what its like to have to leave work when their kid gets hit in the head with a baseball. Real woman can multitask better then anyone. They can do their jobs, take care of their families, all while staying informed with whats going on in the world. Real woman know its not all about them and are willing to sacrifice for the greater good. Whether its giving up that new dress to get the kids clothes or something more important like sending their child off to war. I am proud to be a real woman and I am proud to see another real woman in the national political spotlight.
Sarah Palin apparently has struck a chord with American women, even if her politics are too far right for some. She has managed to draw support and sympathy from women who understand the daily struggle of managing a career and a family. So why doesn’t she draw the same sympathy from Gloria Steinem, whose whole career has been about giving women the same rights as men? Let’s take a look at the astrology of these two influential
women.
While Steinem and Palin share a Saturn in freedom loving zodiac sign of Aquarius, that’s about all they share. Steinem’s Moon, South Node and Midheaven in flamboyant Leo opposed Palin’s stellium of Aquarian personal planets of Mercury, Sun and Mars. Whatever Palin says feels like a battlecry to Steinem. From Steinem’s Saturn in Aquarius influence, she fears that Palin’s strong stances threatened essential freedoms. If this was not enough to make sparks fly Steinem’s planet of values, Venus, sits on Palin’s Mars and Steinem’s Mars sits on Palin’s Venus. In a male/female relationship this indicates sexual compatibility. In any other, it indicates a fierce competitiveness. With Palin’s powerful Pluto/Uranus combination opposite Steinem’s Mercury, her thinking processes, each is likely to find themselves entrenched in their intellectual positions. If they were to debate, it would be a lively one, but neither would come out the winner.
The truth is that most American’s are stuck somewhere in the middle of each woman’s polarizing positions. Which side we come closest too will be decided this coming November.
Note: Sarah’s birth time, reportedly given by a friend of Palin’s, is rushing around the net, but is unconfirmed. Hopefully, someone will dig up some documentation. Anyone in Sandpoint, Idaho willing to go take a look at city hall?

Read this for your daughters!
Gloria Steinem and Governor Palin are proof that women can and do diverge on important issues.
Even on the question of whether women should vote!
Most people are totally in the dark about HOW the suffragettes won votes for women, and what life was REALLY like for women before they did.
Suffragettes were opposed by many women who were what was known as ‘anti.’
The most influential ‘anti’ lived in the White House. First Lady Edith Wilson was a wealthy Washington widow who married President Wilson in 1915.
Her role in Wilson’s decision to jail and torture Alice Paul and hundreds of other suffragettes will never be fully known, but she was outraged that these women picketed her husband’s White House.
I’d like to share a women’s history learning opportunity…
“The Privilege of Voting” is a new free e-mail series that follows eight great women from 1912 - 1920 to reveal ALL that happened to set the stage for women to win the vote.
It’s a real-life soap opera! And it’s ALL true!
Powerful suffragettes Alice Paul and Emmeline Pankhurst are featured, along with TWO gorgeous presidential mistresses, First Lady Edith Wilson, Edith Wharton, Isadora Duncan and Alice Roosevelt.
There are tons of heartache on the rocky road to the ballot box, but in the end, women WIN!
Thanks to the suffragettes, women have voices and choices!
