Astrology to the Rescue: Last Minute Mother’s Day Guide

Number Three Son said to me yesterday, ”What would you like for Mother’s Day, because if you don’t tell me, you’ll end up with flowers and candy.”

I didn’t know if this was a threat or a promise, but I face a similar quandry with my own mom. If I asked her, I’d likely get the stock mother’s answer “You don’t need to get me anything.” This is a lie, of course, for all the reasons we know are true, not the least of which is that the Moon will be in Leo tomorrow. If we don’t do something big and showy, we are likely to suffer. But what to get remains the question. What would she like?

Astrology to the rescue. Below is a list of Mother’s Day gift suggestions by sun sign. You can also try using your mother’s moon or venus in picking out a gift. Go here and pop in her birth date to find those out. You do remember your Mother’s birthday, don’t you?

Aries–Aries moms have been feeling a little neglected lately. Oh, its not just you, its the Universe at work, giving Aries an overdue kick in the behind. So make a fuss by giving them something with their name on it. No, not the word “Mom”. A piece of jewelry, a mug, a glitzy shirt, (unless she has some unforturnate Capricorn influence in her chart), anything, as long as it has her name on it. Wrap it nicely. Underneath, you know she just a big kid, after all.

Taurus–Things have been grooving for Taurus, except this weekend, with Mars moving into Leo with the moon right along with it. This will make her cranky. The biggest, most expensive, we are talking Godiva here, box chocolates you can afford are nearly mandatory. Some roses helps it all along.

Gemini–Mercury, the planet of communication is in the sign of Gemini, so what she really wants is to hear from you. Any gift you give her won’t mean nearly enough as some qualitiy time spent with her, even if its on the phone. Let her talk, (you know she will) and listen intently. Make sure you give her a card. And this is one sign that doesn’t disparage gift cards, so give her one from her favorite store. Or pay her cell phone bill for a month, though that one might hurt.

Cancer–You know if has to be mushy and you know if has to come from the heart, so why do you ask? Put together a scrapbook of pictures of the both of you (you can include some of the other family too) and wrap it pretty. Then take her out to dinner. Flowers are OK too.

Leo–It has to be flashy. You can follow the Aries advice, but make sure that it is wrapped in gold paper and ribbons at least. They love to eat out, (and hate to cook, as you well remember) so a gift card to their favorite restaurant is OK, too.

Virgo–Make her dinner. Even if you are all thumbs in the kitchen, she’ll find it charming. Make sure either most of it is done before she arrives, or bring it over to her house and warm it there. Otherwise you run the risk of her taking over the task. You know what she likes, she made you eat it as a child. Barring that, a gift basket of things you picked out yourself will warm her heart.

Libra–Libra has been a little overwhelmed with a few financial glitches lately, though of course she wouldn’t tell you, so maybe she hasn’t been doing the things she normally likes, like getting her hair or nails done. A gift certificate to her favorite salon might just be the ticket, leaving her to feel like her marvelous self again. A gift certificate to a clothing store is good too, because what Libra hates to shop for clothes? Just make sure it isn’t for K-Mart, for heavens sake.

Scorpio–You know you can never buy her anything she likes. Give yourself a break. Take her to a movie. Or bring some movies to her. She likes mysteries and tortured romances. If they carry both elements, you have a winner. Yeah, yeah, get her a card and a some roses, but if you want to make this day special for her, use watching movies with her as a way of spending some time with her without having to say anything.

Sagittarius–With moon and mars in Leo, she’s a happy camper, but the Universe has been neglecting her of late, which means that this transfers to you. Oh, she’ll forgive you, of course, if you take her out to a nice restaurant. Make sure all the other kids are there and that you are nice to all of them, even the butt that borrowed money from you and hasn’t paid it back. It will warm her heart to see all of you getting along.

Capricorn–Anything you can do that makes things a little easier will be appreciated. Hire a maid for a day (or clean her house yourself, just don’t move any important papers. Yes, they are all important.) She won’t let you cook for her, but you can bring in take-out from her favorite restaurant. She’s feeling a little nostaligic lately, so bring out the old photo albums and look them over together. She doesn’t need anything, of course. She’ll tell you that herself. She likes Godiva chocolates too, and you should indulge her a bit, even if the doctor says she shouldn’t. Sometimes, even a Capricorn gets a secret kick out of breaking the rules.

Aquarians–Uranian ruled moms are frustrating to buy for, mostly because their interests change so frequently and they are just as likely to have gotten the thing themselves anyway. Hedge your bets by getting a gift card to an electronics or book store. Or if you can pry out of them the latest workshop or class they want to attend, you can pony up for that. They may act too busy to spend any time with you, but pop your head in anyway, because they really do need to reminded that you are their child afterall. No really, they’ve been missing you, but are just too stubborn to tell you. You remember that, don’t you?

Pisces–We back to mush again, so ham it up for your Pisces mom. Yes, you should get her the traditional flowers and cards. A nice arrangement means more than a bouquet (trust me) and the card should be a gushy as possible without making your stomach turn. A nice piece of jewerly wouldn’t hurt either. She prefers silver to gold, unless she has some strong Leo elements in her chart. All she wants is to be appreciated, which I’m sure she’s told you on more than one occasion.

Good luck, and Happy Mother’s Day!
