Full Moon Madness?

A United Kingdom medical firm, Essex Medical & Forensic Services, plans its staffing around the full moon, claiming that the need for medical service peaks at this time.

“At the University of Miami, psychologist Arnold Lieber and his colleagues decided to test the old belief of full-moon “lunacy” which most scientists had written off as an old wives’ tale. The researchers collected data on homicide in Dade County (Miami) over a period of 15 years — 1,887 murders, to be exact. When they matched the incidence of homicide with the phases of the moon, they found, much to their surprise, that the two rose and fell together, almost infallibly, for the entire 15 years! As the full or the new moon approached, the murder rate rose sharply; it distinctly declined during the first and last quarters of the moon. “ (from Innerself.com)

Yet, others claim that there is no full moon effect as in this Meta Study. So what is going on with the full moon, and does it affect human behavior?

When the moon is full it is in the oppositie sign of the zodiac as the sun. Today, the moon is in Pisces, while the Sun is in Virgo. The sun is the masculine principle and the moon the feminine. When these two planets are in tension aspect, the result is . . . tension. Sackoian and Acker in Predictive Astrology say this about the full moon:

“Ego confrontations over emotional issues can cause problems. Often there are uspets in domestic affairs. The individual is likely to experience difficullties with children. Lack of vitality or digestive problems are likely during this period. This is not a favorable tinme for social or romantic activities.”

So what is going on? Is there an effect or isn’t there? There is a lot of resistance in scientific circles to keep an open mind about astrology. It is decried it as superstition. That hardly inspires confidence in the objectivity of scientists.

Whether the phenomenon of the full moon erupts into emotional disturbances, or heightens the prospect of a psychotic break, or induces more accidents is still an open question for most. But its a closed question for some. Just ask Essex Medical & Forensic Services.
