“I didn’t see any warning signs or red flags”

The City Attorney of Crandon, Minnesota, where six people yesterday were gunned down by an off duty police officer said about the man “He wrote good reports and was ‘true to his job,’ and “From what I saw of him, I didn’t see any warning signs or red flags.”

As a culture we are truly blind to the “red” flags that would signal that an individual is capable of violence, Even more frightening we do not provide support for those individuals that are at risk to commit violence. If one in four women are victims of domestic violence, that means that 25% of our male population are violent individuals.

Here a young man, twenty years old, could not tolerate some insults thrown at him when he tried to talk to his former girlfriend. We have no details on the breakup, other that one of insults thrown at him at the party (and we don’t know by who) was that he was a “worthless pig.” What behavior sparked that comment? How fragile must a psyche be to spark the urge to shoot and kill this many people. He had to get his gun from his car and go back to the party to wield his weapon. He was later killed in a shootout with his fellow officers. No one is this young man’s life noticed a hair trigger temper or an inability to bear up under the normal pressures of life?

The tragedy within this tragedy is that we allow incidents like this to happen because we are enamored of the idea of the “warrior male” endemic in our popular culture. Strength is how you throw a punch or shoot a gun. Strength is keeping “your woman” under control. Its sickening, its frightening and its got to stop.

It time to recognize potentially violent individuals and get them the help they need, before more people are killed at the altar of god of war.

I saw this, very sad. I wondered about what had really went down as well, especially since it is all one side. So many lives were destroyed and I’m not just talking those that were shot. But even those officers that had to shoot him, especially if they worked with him. Very sad case.
