Ike Turner: Bad Boy Made Good, Then Not
December 13, 2007

Ike Turner is certainly one of the most dehumanized figures in rock history. Mention his name and the first association that comes to most anyone’s mind is “abusive husband,” not “soul star” or “rock & roll pioneer.” According to legend, Turner was a tyrannical ogre who used physical violence and psychological intimidation to control his infinitely more talented wife Tina, while indulging his own appetites for cocaine and women at every turn. That’s not entirely accurate, although by most accounts Turner did quite a bit to earn that reputation; he spent time in prison due to his drug problems, and his own refutations of Tina’s allegations of abuse have been inconsistent at best over the years.
Like the Scorpio he was, so much about Ike Turner is shrouded by his “bad boy” demeanor. Did he or didn’t he abuse Tina? He denied it, but then abusers usually do deny their behavior. Was he a heavy drug user? He did spend time in prison for his drug use. This rock ‘n roll Hall of Famer made good, then lost it from his own excesses. With his Sun, Mercury and Venus in Scorpio, like most denizens of this bent zodiac sign, he had a real talent for sabotaging himself.
Since we do not have a birthtime, we can only speculate on his moon position. However, with a birth time at 6:30 a.m. we come up with a twelve house sun, a complex position that when afflicted can result in confinement in institutions. The moon would be in Virgo, denoting a drive for perfection, in challenge aspect to his Mars and in stress aspect to his Uranus. This is a person who has difficulting controlling his anger. The moon would be conjunct Neptune, an addiction aspect. This would also put the tenth house cusp, the section of the horoscope that rules career with the entertainer’s signature, the sign of Leo, with his Jupiter firmly placed in that house. Whatever he did, he did big, and he achieved fame and acclaim.
Venus in Scorpio drives individuals with this placement to search out the wrong partners, with sexual proclivities that are fueled for a need with power and control. Mars, representing the sexual drives, is in the sign of Sagittarius, a placement that doesn’t mind who or how many it boogey woogeys with. It was easy with someone with Ike’s Scorpionic drives to find release in multiple affairs, especially since his Venus is in challenge aspect to the planet of excess, Jupiter.
During the morning of December 12, Ike’s Part of Death, 14 degrees, 13 minutes of Leo, (based on a 6:30 a.m. birthtime), was the point of a yod (the Finger of God) between the Capricorn moon and the Uranus in Pisces. This Part of Death is conjunct his Jupiter in Leo. In the book, The Astrology of Death, Richard Houck speculates that Jupiter is the planetary symbol of death. Inasmuch as Jupiter represents our an expanding of our spiritual consciousness this makes a certain amount of sense. So, we have two confirmations of the passage from this body in the natal chart based on a 6:30 a.m. birthtime.
Ike Turner’s life is a study in Scorpionic energy that those under this zodiac signs’s influence would do well to study. In the meantime, let us also remember Ike for his many contributions to music. He was, just as all of us, an imperfect being. Let us keep this in mind as we evaluate his as well as our own lives.
