“Other” Zodiac Signs, and the Tropical Zodiac
February 10, 2008

“Mom,” my twenty something Scorpio son said, “Did you know there is a 13th zodiac sign?” (This was, of course, his Plutonic way of asking me to explain something. Scorpios and twenty something year old men always want to appear like they know what they are talking about, so they rarely ask an actual question.) “What makes you think there is a thirteenth sign?” I reply, ever the Aquarian, answering a question with a question.
“Let me show you what I’m talking about,” he replied and taking the laptop, pulled up the website with this startling information about an “other” zodiac sign.
“Hmmm, well, this has nothing to do with the tropical zodiac.”
“But it says right here . . .”
“Let me explain. The tropical zodiac is twelve thirty degree divisions of the three hundred and sixty degree wheel. Two thousand years ago, these divisions happened to line up with the apparent path of the sun in the sky against the backdrop of the constellations. However, due to the earth’s wobble, these divisions moved out of alignment with the constellations. We call this phenomenon ‘the precession of the equinoxes’. But even though the thirty degree divisions moved out of alignment with the heavens, they retained their original associations, the first thirty degree division being Aries, the second, Taurus, and so on.”
“Oh.”
“There are other people who propose even more divisions of the zodiac. Twenty years ago an astrologer by the name of Mary Elizabeth Jochmans, proposed 14 division of 24 degrees each, renaming the zodiac and adding the symbols of the eagle, lynx, dolphin and unicorn. But it never caught on. This issue of other zodiac signs is an ongoing debate, but not one that takes up the time of most astrologers.”
With that question answered, he went on his way, but now having the whole tropical zodiac thing brought up again, I started asking my own questions, like, how do the newly discovered dwarf planets fit in the Greek model of the universe?
We’ll take a look at this question tomorrow.
