Soul Development and the Planets
December 3, 2007

In “Journey of Souls” and “Destiny of Souls”, Michael Newton, Ph.D.,describes multiple levels of soul development, progressing from newly created souls to souls who eventually merge with the Source of all creation. Earth is just one of many environments where a soul gains knowledge and wisdom by working through challenges. These books do not talk about astrology, because that is not the point of the work. However, in reading these books it becomes easy to ascribe the functions of the planets to soul developement, providing a unique perspective on the planets.
The Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars describe the the body, the conditions of the body and the mental workings of the body. They are the “physical expression of our identity”. Though theoretically any soul could work in any body, body selections are taken very seriously to maximize soul growth. The same theme is echoed in “Astrological Revelations” by John Willner, and other works based on the Edgar Cayce readings.
Saturn describes the first goal of our physical incarnations on earth. Saturn functions as the planet of work and responsibility. It is often described as the “taskmaster” and the “teacher”. Saturn prods us to take responsibity for the choices in our life. The acceptance of responsibility is critical juncture in the development of the soul. It delineates the time when a soul leaves the beginner ranks and progresses to the intermediate levels. Eventually we progress in Saturn’s lessons and display the highest traits of Saturnian development. “The mark of an advanced spirit is one who has patience with society and shows extraordinary coping skills.”
The emerging awareness of a world beyond the physical is denoted by Jupiter. For the Greeks, Jupiter was the god of the sky, which for most of us, denotes our spiritual home, that which some call “heaven”. Here is the part of us that aspires to do more than live in a human body, touch more than the physical. Though Jupiter we experience expansiveness, touching on our spiritual awareness of the world beyond this one. Jupiter is also called the higher octave of the planet of communications Mercury. In “Journey of Souls”, the dwelling place of souls is described as such,” . . . the most outstanding characteristic of the spirit world is a continuous feeling of a powerful mental force directing everything in uncanny harmony”. When we remember that the divine home is not a place “out there” but a place that is intimately connected to us, Jupiter becomes descriptive our our personal relationship to the creative forces of the universe.
