“Of course Pittsburg is going to win.” says my day job boss, “It’s just a matter of by how much. If they don’t make the point spread, a lot of people are going to lose.”

He was, of course, referring to the bets bookies around the world are taking.

The Steelers are odds on favorite for this Sunday’s gridiron match-up and with good reason.

The team . . is one of three teams to have won the Super Bowl five times. No team has played more conference championship games and Pittsburgh has hosted more conference championship games than any other NFL franchise. From 1974 to 1979 the franchise became the first NFL franchise to win four Super Bowl titles in six seasons, a feat which is yet to be matched. The 2005 team was the first sixth-seeded team in NFL history to advance to a conference championship game; they went on to win the game, followed by their latest Super Bowl victory on February 5, 2006.

By contrast, their opponents, The Arizona Cardinals has this record:

In the six-plus decades since winning the championship in 1947, the team has qualified for the playoffs only six times and has won only five playoff games, three of which were achieved during their ongoing run in the 2008-09 NFL Playoffs.

Indeed, many people can’t believe the Cardinals won their Division, let alone advance to the Superbowl.

But does the Steelers take this year’s Superbowl, or does the Cinderella team steal the title? Is my boss’ optimism over the Steeler’s chances justified?

What does astrology have to tell us?

Contrasting styles will clash when the Arizona Cardinals and Pittsburgh Steelers hook up Sunday for an intriguing Super Bowl in Tampa, Fla.

Pittsburgh’s defense has posted incredible numbers throughout the season and will be challenged by Arizona’s high-flying offense.

It looks like the Steelers are taking anything for granted in the upcoming match-up:

All week long the Steelers have talked about what it will take to stop the high-powered Arizona Cardinals passing attack. And if history is any indication, they’ve had some trouble with that before.

Earlier this season the Steelers played the Indianapolis Colts and QB Peyton Manning. The Steelers lost 24-20.

“There are some parallels that you can pull from that game, and really, we had complete clarity about how that game could unfold as we prepared for it,” Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin said.”You can draw the same parallels when you’re playing a guy like Kurt Warner — that when you’ve got him, you better get him because he’s going to come back and get you.”

superbowl-steelersThe Steeler are a ruthless team, despite their sociable Libra Sun sitting alongside the planet of abundance, Jupiter. Their Mars, the planet of aggression, is in the zodiac sign of domination and control, Scorpio. Venus, the planet that represents their value system, sits along side with Mars, showing that they really enjoy getting down and dirty to get what they want. The attitude “you better get him because he’s going to come back and get you” is a Scorpio attitude through and through. This combination is in stress aspect (inconjunct) the planet of the unpredictable, Uranus, which shows they really go over the top to take out their opposition. With the Steeler’s Pluto sitting on the Cardinal’s Mars, they are counting on this strategy to eliminate the effectiveness of Kurt Warner and the Cardinal’s passing game.

superbowl-cardsThe Cardinals like to dominate too, due to the planet planet of identity, the Sun being in Scorpio sitting along side the planet of thinking processes Mercury. But this Sun/Mercury combination is in challenge aspect to a weakly placed Mars in Cancer. This indicates that offensively they would rather think than fight. With Jupiter forming easy energetic connections in the configuration known as the Grand Trine with the planet of domination, Pluto and the planet of what makes us feel secure, the Moon, all of which in air signs, strategy and a passing game feels like a winning combination to them.

A birth chart doesn’t tell the whole story. We change and grow over the years, and so do entities like football teams. To look at how a entity evolves, astrologers look at progressions, of which there are different types. We look here to what is called secondary progressions.

steelers-progIn the secondary progressed chart for the Steelers, we see that that Mars, Jupiter, Pluto and Uranus is in the configuration known as the Grand Cross. A Grand Cross is a particularly difficult aspect to navigate, and being in what astrologers called Cardinal signs afflicts their ability to move the ball forward. See that by transit (how it is in the sky right now) the planet of action, Mars in the sign of traditional sign Capricorn. This signifies that traditional or “same old, same old” ways of playing the game is only going to hold them back. In addition, Saturn, the planet of restrictions is sitting right at the doorway of the tenth house of career, never a good sign for career advancement. There just isn’t anything to help them here on this important game day.

cards-progBy contrast, the transiting Sun and Neptune are sitting on the progressed Mercury, Sun, Moon combination of the Cardinals, makes a favorable aspect to Mercury.

It looks to this astrologer, that the Cardinal’s “thinking” game has the advantage over the Steelers tried and true methods of winning. If I were a betting woman, I would be putting my money on the Cardinals to win the Steeler’s point spread withstanding.
