The Aquarian Paradigm
February 3, 2008
Aquarian energy, and the energy of its ruler, Uranus is not well understood, though it has been present with us since our very beginnings as a species:
Aquarius (the Water Bearer) is one the oldest known constellations and has not changed much in appearance. It is one of the astrological constellations. Not very much is known about the mythology of Aquarius other than he ruled over much of the sky known as the ‘Sea’ in ancient Babylon. The ‘Sea’ included the constellations of Capricorn the ‘Goat- Fish’, Eridanus, Hydra and Cetus. It is not by accident that the Sun passes through Aquarius during the rainy season. Aquarius was the forebear of floods and the spring rains.
Either by human accident or cosmic design, our earliest understanding of this symbol was lost, leaving us to cast about for the meaning the Waterbearer in our charts. Consequently, we are left with a hodgepoge of associations. Aquarius is at once group oriented but individualistic, innovative, yet inflexible, friendly, yet has problems with intimacy, magnanimous yet demanding, scientific, yet unpredictable, progressive, but stubborn.
Even when Uranus was discovered, the brain confusion surrounding this sign was not cleared away. First, the connection between Aquarius and Uranus took a least a half century to establish. Even then Aquarius was considered to be co-ruled by its old ruler, Saturn, and its new ruler Uranus, one foot stuck in the past and the other in the future.
Though many astrologers had a clue about the meaning of the sign of Aquarius, it wasnât until the discovery of Chiron in 1977, the bridge between Saturnian structure and Uranian form, that we could begin to articulate the Aquarian function. In 1984, seven years after the discovery of Chiron, Steven Forrest confidently pronounced this function in his book The Inner Sky:
Enomous forces are massed against our individuality. . The Water-Bearer must resist the coersions of her culture. . . [and] follow the dictates of her own indivuality, making her choices regardless of the rage or hoots of disbelief those choices produce in the people around her. . .[failure to do that will] sidetrack the far more fundamental Aquarian process, that of individuation.
Individuation is an essential component of our growth as spiritual beings. It is our unique contribution to our species while in body and our solemn offering to the Godhead in spirit.
All of us has Aquarian functions in the chart, either by position on the cusp of a house or by a planetâs residence in the sign of Aquarius and where Uranus resides in your chart. Locate where these are here and discover your Aquarian paradigm.
