The Astrology of Missing Persons: Steve Fossett

by Beth Turnage

October 5, 2008

On September 3, 2007, millionaire adventurer Steve Fossett told a fellow aviator that “he was going to play for a while”, climbed into a two-seat Bellanca Super Decathlon plane and was never seen again.

On October 2, 2008 it was reported that the wreckage of the plane was found at an elevation of 10,000 feet on a mountain in the Mammoth Lakes area of California, approximately 80 miles south from his origination point in Yerington, Nevada.

“The crash looked so severe I doubt if someone would have walked away from it,” Anderson told reporters. “There was no body in the plane. We have not found any human remains at the crash site.”
National Transportation and Safety Board official Mark Rosenker said preliminary analysis of the site indicated Fossett had died in the crash.

And the reason that Fossett’s plane went down is speculated upon by one of his friends:

Downdrafts, Morgan said, are winds that whip over the Sierra and force planes down with crazy gusts. Thermals are blasts of air that thrust up from the ground when cold and hot air mix in environments like that of the eastern Sierra and surrounding desert.

The day Fossett disappeared, the skies were clear and the temperature was about 80 to 90 degrees. Seemingly perfect weather for the kind of morning jaunt Fossett had in mind that day. But as Morgan and others pointed out, perfect weather means nothing to downdrafts and thermals - and that day, high in the Sierra, the winds were blowing at more than 30 knots.

What can astrology tell us about the finding of Steve Fossett’s body and his plane?

Nina at Gryphon Astrology posed this question over a year ago on her site as a horary question. Below is Nina’s chart.

And her commentary:

Unfortunately, I fear the worst. Fossett is symbolized by the ruler of the 7th house of other people in general, Venus. Venus is right on the cusp of the turned 4th house, which rules all endings, and which seems to be very common in horoscopes having to do with missing persons. Venus’s position in itself, however, is not a complete testimony of death. The famed astrologer, William Lilly, says that a significator’s location in the 4th house only indicates death when there has been a long absence, the person was lost in remote parts, and/or there is strong external evidence pointing to death

And:

With his significator, Venus, in the 10th house in Leo, our authorities tell us that this means he is on high ground (at the very top of the chart), in a place of wild beasts, the desert, steep and rocky terrain that is likely quite wild and inaccessible.

That certainly describes the finding of the wreckage of Fossett’s plane. What does the event chart tell us?

On the day of Steve Fossett’s last flight, the moon was in Gemini, the moon of short journeys and it was in friendly (sextile) energetic connection with Venus. So this was indeed intended to be a short flight for pleasure. But notice the lines that form a square. This is a Grand Cross in mutable, meaning changeable, signs. In a Grand Cross, the energy of the moment runs around all points of the cross like an electrical current often bringing many things going wrong at the same time. Since Fossett didn’t file a flight plan, we have no idea if he ended up going in the wrong direction, though this is possible. Venus, which we already indicated represents the pleasure trip was in stress aspect (inconjunct) the planet of accidents, Uranus. The Sun is in challenge aspect to Uranus and Mercury, the planet that rules travel, is in challenge aspect to the planet of transformation, Pluto. Anyway you slice it, this just wasn’t a good day to go joy riding in any vehicle.

So the accident happened, and as Nina’s chart shows, at a high elevation and in an inaccessible place. But what about Fossett’s body? Will that be found?

It is interesting to note that Saturn in both charts is in zero whole degrees. Saturn in the chart of deaths often represents the body itself. Chillingly, in zero degrees, the body will not be found.

Could have astrology helped in locating Fossett’s body sooner?

There is an experimental technique that is used by one astrologer that goes like this: (in this case the astrologer is talking about abductions)

when the exact time of abduction was know, a planet in the natal chart exactly align with a mathematical position at the most east point of the horizon at the time of the disappearance or the abduction.

The technique weighs the strength of each planet in determining the “pull” of the location the body is most likely to be. The event chart is overlaid a map of the area.

Here in the event chart you see that the ascendant (the most eastern point) is four degrees of Libra in friendly energetic connection to the Moon. But the moon is conjunct Mars and opposite Jupiter. The moon squares Saturn, which represents the body. Saturn trines Pluto. Here is the map of Fossett’s wreckage compared to his origination point. Now take a look at both charts. In the event chart, Pluto, the planet of death and transformation is in the approximate position where the plane was found, which is the third house. In Nina’s horary chart, the ruler of the same area is Saturn. Saturn represents the body of the deceased, indicating that the body would be found south of the origination point. To narrow down the search area in terms of miles, if you added all the points of the Grand Cross, including the karmic South Node, you would narrow the area down to 60 miles from the origination point. If you were to add the Pluto position, you would come up with 86 miles South. This is much closer an area to search than the thousands of square miles that were searched. Is this a coincidence or astrology at work?
