The Astrology of Sedna: How This Planet Works in Your Life
April 16, 2008

Every once in a while you get a client where nothing is quite right and then again nothing is quite wrong either. Everything on the surface looks good, home, career, etc. but there is an underlying sense of dissatisfaction you get from the client, something that goes beyond the usual Uranian and Neptunian sturm and drang of the mid-life crisis. There is a sense of opportunities missed or opportunities that never quite materialized. This is where Sedna comes in.
As mentioned before, Sedna appears to act like the blind spot in your life. In the area that Sedna sits we have a fundamental lack of understanding of what we are due, what we can expect. It is a resource untapped, because we have no understanding on how to use it. Often times, when we do try to tap this resource we get some nasty blow back because of a mishandling/misunderstanding of the energy.
Much care must be used in approaching a Sedna situation. Our instincts are skewed in this area and so we must plan a reasonable response and work the plan. Faith is the vital component here. As with all the transplutonian bodies, we are working with extra dimensional realities. We have no earthly frame of reference to make sense of the circumstances, let alone the results. Now that these dwarf planets have revealed themselves, we have access to their energies, but we have a way to go before we understand they work in our lives.
Because Sedna’s trip around the Sun is so long, every person alive has Sedna in Aries or Taurus. This makes it easy to find it in the chart, but it obscures the meaning of your Aries or Taurus point. With Aries you were never taught to defend yourself properly. Either you are unable to defend yourself or you go into overkill mode. With Taurus, resources were withheld from you as you were growing up, leaving you to feel like you don’t deserve the financial resources you need. Consequently, you over consume to compensate for these feelings.
Sedna started the twentieth century in the sign of Aries, a period in our history that was marked by a series of fight to the death World Wars that nearly destroyed the areas of conflict. Ultimately, during the late sixties, during the Vietnam War, Sedna came to the anarectic degree of 29 degrees of Aries, where a realization of the utter futility of the activity of war finally forced a brokered end to Vietnam. On 9/11, Sedna was 15 degrees of Taurus, sextiling the United States sun, revealing that the excuse to go to war was based on the need to acquire resources, not for protection. Since Sedna has gone out of Aries, war is a much different proposition than in the early half of the last century.
Let’s take a look at Sedna in the houses. Today we’ll look at house positions one through six. Saturday we’ll look at house positions seven through twelve.
Sedna in the First house, Mars in aspect to Sedna–Your looks were overemphasized by your parents or it was ignored. In any cause, your parents always found someone else’s child more attractive than you. Your sense of your own sexual attractiveness is way off the mark. You could have the looks of beauty queen and not know it, or look like a toad and think you look like Angelina Jolie or Brad Pitt. You have an unfortunate tendency of not knowing how to gauge the effect of your actions. You don’t do enough or you do way too much. You suffer for it either way.
Sedna in the Second House, Sedna in aspect to Venus–You were denied financial resources as a child or given way too much. In this respect your response to money, wealth and personal resources is way off center. If you were denied resources, such as a father who failed to pay child support, you ended up learning that you only had yourself to depend on. Consequently, not only do you end up paying your own bills but everyone else’s around you. You own sense of frugality makes a Capricorn jealous that he can’t be as cheap as you. Really, it is OK to buy your shoes from K-Mart instead of the dollar store. If you were given too much, it is a nasty shock to you that the world not only does not owe you a living, you are expected to pay taxes for the privilege of being here.
Sedna in the Third House, Sedna in aspect to Mercury–No one wanted to hear what you had to say, and your siblings always seemed to get the best of you. Never taught the value of reciprocal communication, you don’t use an answering machine, return phone calls, answer e-mails. or write thank you notes. You often claim helplessness in the face of technological advances in communications devices, though this condition is the result of your belief you aren’t smart enough to use these things. You are smarter than you give yourself credit.
Sedna in the Fourth House, Sedna in aspect to the Moon–This complex position deserves a book all on it’s on. A real home or at least the feeling of having a real home was denied to you as a child. This lack of roots makes it impossible for you to establish a home of your own. You don’t mind living in a hotel, in fact you enjoy it. Even if you do manage to end up with a permanent domicile, there is often an sense of impermanency about it, a lack of furniture for the rooms, a mix mosh of dishes and cutlery, no personal decorative touches. You’ll never understand why these things are important, so enlist some help to strike a right note where you live. For heaven’s sake, don’t ask your mother.
Sedna in the Fifth House, Sedna in aspect to the Sun–With Sedna in the fifth you always feel like your creative endeavors are not good enough. Oh you certainly try, but your ultimate disastifaction with your attempts leaves you with a sense of frustration. For you you must get engaged in the process and stop trying to judge your results. The same thing goes for romance, because romance is about a creative process as it gets.
Sedna in the Sixth House–This position leaves you unprotected in the areas of health and the people who work for you. As a child, regular physical checkups, shots and dental care were neglected, leaving you with a sense of being uncared for. You don’t realize the value of these activities and neglect them yourself. You leave serious medical conditions untended until someone packs you off to the emergency room. People who work for you take advantage of you because you are unable to establish appropriate boundaries for your working relationship. Schedule those appointments and make some rules. You need them.

I’m curious about the rest (houses from 7h to 12th). Mine seem to make a lot of sense. Did you research this? How?

I started at looking at Sedna when it was first named. I looked at the discovery date and parsed the myth. The thing that struck me about Sedna herself was the totally dysfunctional relationship between her father and her.
I applied the Sedna position to the charts of people I knew very well. Once I figured out Sedna’s basic function, the things that didn’t make sense before in these folks charts fell into place. Now when I see something wonky in the behavior of individuals, I think “That must be Sedna working!”
Of course, I’m the first one to say that we need to do a lot more research on Sedna. I was struck when I did the analysis of the toddler’s death by dehydration that Sedna was in the second (parent withholding resources) opposite Jupiter in the eight house. OMG! Could anything have been done to save this child? Maybe if he was relocated so that Jupiter was out of the eighth. But who was going to do that? Who even knew that withholding resources would be the cause of his death.
Any other observations by other astrologers would be most welcome.
Houses seven through twelve will be posted this coming Saturday.
