The Christmas Star
December 23, 2007

Many years ago a fundamentalist Christian told me in all seriousness that astrology was evil because the Magi tipped Herod off to the birth of Jesus, thereby causing the slaughter of the innocents. This point of view only illustrates the lack of knowlege about astrology that results in these kinds of judgments.
The importance of the Christmas Star is the actions it prompted. Three Magi, called “Kings of the Orient” by the King James version of the bible, undertook a long journey from their respective homelands to pay homage to the the new “King of the Jews”. The astrology of that time was typically practiced was the astrology of nations and by extension, their kings. When the astrologers came to Herod it was because they had seen the sign of the Jews in the heavens and divined a new king was born. They expected that king to be in the royal palace
The symbolism of this story is that the new “King of the Jews” was not to found in the royal palace. The Magi’s discovery of the new king laid in manager was a familar mythic theme of the royalty raised among the common people who by that experience develops the insight to lead and protect them.
The birth of Jesus heralded the beginning of the Age of Pisces an age where many of the earth’s occupants became aware of Piscean mysticism through the teachings of one man. Religion for many ceased to be the daily devotions to many gods and goddesses, and became centered around one. The nature of God changed from capricious, angry. bickering gods and goddesses many knew, to the loving, caring one we imagine today. In making this change we revealed changes in our own nature, the expansion of our consciousness. The Christmas Star was the herald for these changes. It signaled not just the birth of Jesus, but the evolution of humankind. As the Magi follow the Star that signalled the growth of man, astrologers today continue to do the same.
