The Creative Process Described Through Astrology
June 11, 2008
Over at Big Sky Astroblog, April Kent started a discussion about happiness and the creative process. Those of us that blog astrology identify ourselves not only as astrologers but as writers as well, drawn into the creative process as much as another writer, musician, visual or performing artist.
Just what does spark the creative process? What makes a writer a poet, a musician a talented flutist, a visual artist a painter?
Astrologers generally check three things on the issue of creativity, the fifth house, the planets in the fifth house and the ruler of the sign on the fifth house.
The fifth house is said to be the house of creativity, though curiously almost no artist, writer or musician in my database of 887 such people had a planet in the fifth house. Clearly, if you do not have a planet there, you need not worry that you aren’t creative. What does seem to count is planetary aspects to the planet of Jupiter.
In checking this same database, eighty seven percent of musicians, writers and artists have two aspects to Jupiter. The most common feature is the Moon in aspect to Jupiter. Forty six percent of the database has this aspect demonstrating that art is a function of their emotions. The most common aspect, surprisingly, is the challenge aspect, the square. For many with the creative bent, it appears that the challenge of producing art is the impetus to creativity. The Sun, our primary essence, follows as the next potent contact with Jupiter, followed by Venus, our appreciation for beauty, Mercury, our capacity for creative thought and Mars, our survival instinct.
Neptune, our dreams and illusions, seem to play a lesser role. Only two aspects, Sun square Neptune and Moon trine Neptune are reflected in just a little less than 10% of the database.
Jupiter then is the home or our muse, our inspiration, our drive to reach out beyond ourselves and manifest works of poetic design. Here is a quick run down on how these connections manifest in your chart.
If you have a Sun/Jupiter connection, your essential essence is tied up in the creative process. Whether you are an administrative clerk or a symphonic musician, for you creativity is the breath of your being.
Moon/Jupiter, your creative process is a function of your emotions. Some people “suffer for their creativity, or they must be happy, but one way or another, you can not create unless you connect with your emotional core.
Mercury/Jupiter–for you the creative process is a function first of the mind. This is a less common path to creativity, but just as effective non the less. First comes the thought, then the execution of the thought, and along the way, the emotions connect, usually through a connection to Mercury from the Moon.
Venus/Jupiter–you not only love beautiful things, you want to create them as well. From cake decorating to sculpture, whatever you touch is rendered in a distinctive and elegant
manner.
Mars/Jupiter–creativity is a matter of intellectual if not physical survival. The drive to create is so urgent, that you can not imagine doing anything else.
What makes you creative?
