True Crime Astrolgy by Edna Rowland, 1996 Llewellyn Publications
Edna Rowland takes on the fierce some task of examining the astro signatures of some of America’s most infamous murders and suicides and does a marvelous job at it. Even after some eleven years after first publication this work holds up well even to the more recent research in these areas.
Taking specific murders and suicides, Ms. Rowland takes you through traditional astrological techniques to reach her conclusions. It must be noted that she places heavy emphasis on house positions ad midpoints, while this astrologer favors planetary aspects for such analysis. Not that she slouches on that. However, I find that she misses a critical connection between Mars, Uranus, and the Moon that my own research indicates a potentially violent personality. This astrologer also takes issue with assertions that certain sun signs or ascendants are more prone to certain behaviors. I believe that not enough comprehensive research is done in that area to make definitive statements of that nature. She is quite right in her assertion that diagnosing mental illness is “outside the province of the astrologer”. As pointed out previously in another post, we don’t yet have definitive diagnostic tools to pinpoint mental illness by interpreting a chart.
Still Ms. Rowland’s book is a fascinating read. She brings together natal and event charts and takes you through her reasoning of why the event happened. Using a wide array of astrological techniques she explains why each of them are significant. She blends chart analysis and transit and midpoint interpretation skillfully, giving any astrology student a glimpse of the ability of the professional astrologer to synthesize information. Whether or not you ultimately agree with her conclusion this book deserves a spot on any astrologer’s bookshelf.
Casual readers will drown in the astrology, beginning astrology students should take their time with this book, intermediate and advanced astrologers will benefit most from a read.
