Why Do Fools Fall in Love?

Puck:
Captain of our fairy band,
Helena is here at hand,
And the youth, mistook by me,
Pleading for a lover’s fee.
Shall we their fond pageant see?
Lord, what fools these mortals be!

–A Midsummer’s Night Dream

The trickster Puck messes with the attractions of four young people and a hilarious romp ensues. His master, Oberon, the King of Fairies, casts a spell on his Queen, Titania, to teach her a lesson. The spell–Titania falls in love with a beast of burden, the ass. Indeed, throughout Shakespeare’s comedy and the comedy of our own lives, love is seen as something that is out our control, something that overrides our good sense and reason, sometimes deliciously so, sometimes leaving us feeling that we are, indeed, fools.

Puck, without regard for the serious consequences of his actions seem in character like the cherubically portrayed son of Venus, Cupid, whose arrows fly at a whim, or at the whim of some god or goddesses. But is it the heady chemical rush of hormones that pushes us headlong into relationships? Or our desire for something deeper, a connection that transcends the day to day reality of our lives?

CupidWhat a spiritual astrologer says is that relationships in our lives mirror the state of our soul, the lessons we need to learn, the desires we need to fulfill for our soul’s growth. In this sense, yes, we are subject to whims and fancies, ones of our own choosing before we come to form on this plane. Lest you think, that all this is just some New Age mumbo jumbo, think about who you are attracted to, the qualities you like and desire in a mate. The planets provide the template of that which you desire to experience, including the experience of a relationship.

To find the position of your Moon, Venus and Mars in your chart, go here. A few quick questions, and you’ll have a handy list of the planets and the house cusps in their signs. Or grab a chart from Astrodeinst and follow along. Piece together these elements and find out what your sweetie loves about and needs from you and vice versa. Here is where you find why fools do fall in love.

The Moon talks about your early childhood experiences. It describes your relationship with your mother and by extension the people you choose to bond with in your life.

Fire Signs, Aries, Leo, Sagittarius moon people have need for attention, support and social interaction from their loved ones. Their mothers kept the focus of the family on themselves, so consequently the fire signs expect the same for themselves. They are great fun to have around, but the upkeep is sometimes more than other people can handle. The people they tend to fall in love with are the ones they can’t captivate with their charm. They do so love a challenge.

Air Signs, Gemini, Libra and Aquarius moon individuals intellectualize their emotions. Social signs, they know the right words and say the right things, but there is sometimes a disconnect between the words and the emotional content of their actions. They experienced their relationship with their mother as lacking in intimacy. Consequently, they have difficulties in establishing emotional ties with others. Patience, stating emotional needs without anger and resentment, and sometimes therapy go a long way in helping these individuals learn to give enough to keep a partner engaged in a relationship. They tend to fall in love with people who can give them a partnership of intellectual equality. Brains count here.

Earth Signs, Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn moons have a need for financial security before they put down emotional roots. These are the people who buy the home, and establish the career before they have the baby. Earth sign moons might have had early issues in the home revolving around financial security. Of all the signs, they are likely to experience emotional trauma when physical needs aren’t met. Mom often provided the material substance here, keeping the home going despite obstacles, but probably wasn’t’ there enough to provided emotional sustenance. Consequently, earth sign moons will put their work ahead of their families viewing this as their contribution to and the sign of devotion to their families. They tend to fall in love with the people who can provide for their physical needs. The way to a man’s heart and all.

The water signs, Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces moons, have need for emotional support and intimacy that most people have a challenge providing. Their emotions run scary deep and they think in terms of emotional content instead of the intellectual. Relationship with mom is complicated and fraught with emotional perils. Then you meet her and find she is a perfectly delightful individual. The water sign moons need harmony in their home life to function properly. Continual upsets and disruptions in routine will make them a basket case. They fall in love with love quite often, thinking they need a partner. They do need a partner, to keep feeding them love and kisses so they can venture out into the cold cruel world. If you love one of these moons, you enjoy the absolute wholeness of total love surrounding you, but you also get to experience total misery when you do not give them what they want.

Venus is about our value systems. It describes the things we desire and qualities we love about people.

The Fire Sign Venus, Aries, Leo and Sagittarius love people who are fun to be around. This can get them into trouble when the fun ends and the good time honey disappears.

The Air Sign Venus, Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius love people who are their friends first. They get in trouble when their intense curiosity about people lead others to think they are more interested than they actually are.

The Earth Sign Venus, Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn love reliable, practical people. Then they wonder why they don’t have any fun.

The Water Sign Venus, Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces love complicated people, thinking them more like puzzles than individuals. They put themselves through the water torture of love if they get hooked on someone who doesn’t reciprocate.

Mars talks about your sex drive and the people you are attracted to physically.

Fire sign Mars, Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are attracted to physically fit people who live an active lifestyle. They’ll test you too, taking you on marathon dates that are tests of your physical endurance. Couch potatoes need not apply.

Air Sign Mars, Gemini, Libra and Aquarius love verbal sparring. They dish it out pretty good in a feat of mental gymnastics that would awe any Olympian. Give as good as you get and they are intrigued. The way to an Air sign Mars is not through their stomach. It is through their brain.

The Earth sign Mars, Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn are attracted to sensual delights. If you are one of them, so much the better. Get used to home cooking.

The Water sign Mars, Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces love a mystery. Everything has layers to them, even Saran wrap. If they find you mysterious, get ready to have every nook and cranny examined. Fortunately for you, this takes some time to do.
